Adhesives by application

Adhesives for surface-protection films and tapes

A surface-protection film is a temporary film that covers carpet, glass or another finished surface, then peels away. The adhesive has to hold until then and come off cleanly. Our grades run from AP 1252R, a crystal-clear grade designed for carpet surface-protection films, to low-peel and low-tack removable grades, in solvent acrylic and, with HYDRO AP 253PF, water-based.

What matters

How much peel does a protection film need?

A protection film has to stay put while the work is done and then come away. On smooth surfaces a low peel lets it release cleanly; carpet and other rough surfaces need a high tack before a film will hold at all. AP 1252R has high peel and high tack, AP 250R and AP 553 are low-peel grades, and two-pack AP 107 is made for low-tack removable tapes.

Will the film come off cleanly after ageing?

Adhesion builds while a film sits on a surface, so what counts is how it comes away weeks later. AP 1252R removes easily and leaves no adhesive behind after ageing, and AP 553 is specified for good removability.

Which grade holds on PE, PP and PVC?

Polyethylene and polypropylene have low surface energy, so many adhesives hold on them poorly, and PVC is demanding too. AP 1252R is made to hold strongly on PE, PP and PVC, and does not ooze or telescope after ageing.

Solvent or water-based?

The ADCRYL™ grades are solvent acrylics. HYDRO AP 253PF is a water-based acrylic emulsion PSA, for coaters who prefer to work without solvent.

What are the typical values?

Grade180° peelLoop tackShearSolids
AP 1252RTwo-pack1100 ± 10% gf/25 mm900 – 1100 gf/inch> 150 h53 ± 2%
AP 250R150 ± 30 gf/25 mm120 – 160 gf/inch> 1500 h30 ± 2%
AP 553250 ± 10% gf/25 mm300 – 400 gf/inch> 1500 h53 ± 2%
AP 107Two-pack90 – 150 gf/25 mm200 – 300 gf/inch—30 ± 2%

We measured these values in our own laboratory according to PSTC methods: 180° peel on stainless steel, with the adhesive coated on 25 µm PET at 25 ± 2 gsm. Shear is printed as a minimum.

Which grade does what?

  • AP 1252R: Two-pack and crystal clear, with high peel, high tack and moderate shear. Designed for carpet surface-protection films and carpet protection tape, and also suited to glass surface-protection films. Removes easily, with no adhesive transfer after ageing.
  • AP 250R: Low peel, high tack, high shear; for paper masking and removable tapes. Specified at 250–300 g/inch on paper.
  • AP 553: Single-pack, self-crosslinking; low peel, high tack and good removability. Specified on PET and PP films, LDPE, paper, synthetic fabrics and foils.
  • AP 107: Two-pack; for low-tack removable tapes.
  • HYDRO AP 253PF: Water-based acrylic emulsion PSA; datasheet on request.

Which grades suit surface-protection films and tapes?

Advance Adhesives Private Limited, a manufacturer of adhesives in Belagavi, India, since 1995, makes five grades for surface-protection films and tapes: AP 1252R, AP 250R, AP 553, AP 107 and HYDRO AP 253PF. They are made for carpet surface-protection films, glass surface-protection films, carpet protection tape and removable protection tapes. The grades are used on carpet, glass, PE, PP and PVC, PET films, paper, synthetic fabrics and foils. We measured peel, tack and shear in our own laboratory according to PSTC methods, with the adhesive coated on 25 µm PET at 25 ± 2 gsm. Adhesion builds while a film sits on a surface, so what counts is how it comes away weeks later. AP 1252R removes easily and leaves no adhesive behind after ageing, and AP 553 is specified for good removability.
