Water-based acrylic PSA for BOPP and packaging tapes

A BOPP tape is a packaging tape on biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film, and many makers coat it with a water-based acrylic emulsion PSA: BOPP tape gum, in the trade's words. Our HYDRO range is made for them. HYDRO AP 117 bonds paper, cardboard, fabric and plastic, dries fast and gives good tack and peel; HYDRO AP 253PF is a second acrylic emulsion PSA from the same range.

What matters

What changes with a water-based coating?

The HYDRO grades are water-based, so the coating line dries off water rather than a flammable solvent. Water takes more heat to evaporate than solvent does, so dryer temperatures and line speed are set differently from a solvent line.

What does a carton-sealing tape need?

A carton-sealing tape has to grab corrugated board at a light press and keep the flaps shut through handling and transport. HYDRO AP 117 gives good tack and peel, and bonds paper and cardboard.

Why does drying speed matter?

Line speed on a coater is often set by how fast the adhesive dries. HYDRO AP 117 is fast drying.

Why trial on your own film?

The film's corona treatment, any release coating on its back and the coat weight all change how a BOPP tape performs. Ask for samples of both HYDRO grades and trial them on your own film and line.

Which grade does what?

  • HYDRO AP 117: Water-based acrylic emulsion PSA. Bonds paper, cardboard, fabric and plastic, for packaging, automotive and construction applications; fast drying, with good tack and peel.
  • HYDRO AP 253PF: Acrylic emulsion PSA from the same water-based range; datasheet on request.

Which grades suit BOPP and packaging tapes?

Advance Adhesives Private Limited, a manufacturer of adhesives in Belagavi, India, since 1995, makes two grades for BOPP and packaging tapes: HYDRO AP 117 and HYDRO AP 253PF. They are made for BOPP packaging tapes, carton-sealing tapes and bonding paper, cardboard, fabric and plastic. The grades are used on BOPP film, paper, cardboard, fabric and plastic.
