Adhesives by application
Adhesives for PET, PP and coloured film tapes
A film tape is a PET or PP film with a thin layer of adhesive, often coloured, and many wind on themselves without a release liner. That asks for cohesion, so the tape unwinds cleanly, and for pigment compatibility in coloured tapes. AP 1062 is made for liner-less filmic tapes; AP 1053P and AP 1063 cover coloured PET tapes, film tapes and labels.
What matters
What does a self-wound tape need?
A liner-less tape is wound on itself, so each turn has to unwind cleanly from the back of the film below it. That calls for a cohesive adhesive that does not split or transfer. The film's back coating plays its part too.
How are film tapes coloured?
Coloured tapes carry pigment in the adhesive layer. AP 1062 takes coloured pigments with titanium dioxide in paste form. AP 1053P takes 10–12% pigment for proper opacity, dispersed with a high-speed disperser, and liquid ink can be used.
How much peel do you need?
AP 1062 is a medium-peel grade. Two-pack AP 1063 gives higher peel and high tack, crosslinked with 0.5–1% Advance Hardener or another commercial hardener.
How long is the pot life with a crosslinker?
AP 1062 can be crosslinked with liquid isocyanates; use the blend within 30 minutes of mixing.
What are the typical values?
| Grade | 180° peel | Loop tack | Shear | Solids |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AP 1062 | 700 ± 10% gf/25 mm | 600 – 800 gf/inch | > 4 h | 36 ± 2% |
| AP 1053P | 900 ± 10% gf/25 mm | 800 – 1000 gf/inch | > 2160 h | 51 ± 2% |
| AP 1063Two-pack | 2000 ± 10 gf/25 mm | — | > 25 min | 51 ± 2% |
We measured these values in our own laboratory according to PSTC methods: 180° peel on stainless steel, with the adhesive coated on 25 µm PET at 25 ± 2 gsm. Shear is printed as a minimum.
Which grade does what?
- AP 1062: Self-crosslinking, medium peel, high cohesive strength; made for liner-less filmic tapes and removable tapes. Pigment compatible.
- AP 1053P: Pigment-compatible, single-pack, self-crosslinking; non-oozing with low shrinkage. Used for coloured PET tapes and PVC signage films.
- AP 1063: Two-pack, higher peel and high tack; for tapes and labels on PET and PP films, paper, synthetic fabrics and foils.
Substrates
Which grades suit PET, PP and coloured film tapes?
Advance Adhesives Private Limited, a manufacturer of adhesives in Belagavi, India, since 1995, makes three grades for PET, PP and coloured film tapes: AP 1062, AP 1053P and AP 1063. They are made for liner-less (self-wound) film tapes, coloured PET tapes, film tapes and labels on PET and PP and industrial tapes on polyvinyl (PVC) films. The grades are used on PET films, PP films, polyvinyl (PVC) films, paper, synthetic fabrics and foils. We measured peel, tack and shear in our own laboratory according to PSTC methods, with the adhesive coated on 25 µm PET at 25 ± 2 gsm. A liner-less tape is wound on itself, so each turn has to unwind cleanly from the back of the film below it. That calls for a cohesive adhesive that does not split or transfer. The film's back coating plays its part too. Datasheets, safety data sheets, samples and quotations are available from the Advance Adhesives sales team.
