Adhesives for double-sided tapes

A double-sided (D/S) tape is a tape with adhesive on both faces of a tissue, PET film or foam carrier. The adhesive has to grab quickly and keep holding under load. Our ADCRYL™ grades for double-sided tapes include single-pack self-crosslinking grades and a two-pack grade used with hardener, each with peel, tack and shear published on the same test basis.

What matters

Why read peel and shear together?

Peel is how firmly the tape holds on to the surface; shear is whether it creeps under a constant load. A double-sided tape fails at the weaker of the two, so for mounting and joining work read the shear column before the peel column.

How much tack does a tape need?

Loop tack and rolling-ball tack show how quickly the adhesive grips at light pressure. Tissue tapes that are pressed by hand onto uneven surfaces need more of it than tapes laminated under a nip roller.

What coat weight are the values measured at?

Our values are measured at 25 ± 2 gsm on 25 µm PET. Peel rises with coat weight up to a point, so compare grades on our basis and then test at the coat weight your tape will carry on each side.

How do the grades cure?

AP 1453 and AP 1065 are single-pack grades that crosslink by themselves once the solvent is removed, reaching full cure in up to 24 hours at room temperature. Two-pack AP 1765 is mixed 100 : 1 with Advance Hardener, which raises its shear.

What are the typical values?

Grade180° peelLoop tackShearSolids
AP 1265HP2500 ± 10% gf/25 mm1400 – 1600 gf/inch> 60 h64 ± 2%
AP 14531400 ± 10% gf/25 mm1200 – 1400 gf/inch> 1000 h53 ± 2%

AP 1765Two-pack2500 ± 10% gf/25 mm2000 – 2500 gf/inch> 18 h64 ± 2%

We measured these values in our own laboratory according to PSTC methods: 180° peel on stainless steel, with the adhesive coated on 25 µm PET at 25 ± 2 gsm. Shear is printed as a minimum.

Which grade does what?

  • AP 1265HP: High solids (64 ± 2%). Oil and solvent resistant; used for double-sided PET and tissue tapes, electrical tape and aluminium foil tape.
  • AP 1453: Single-pack and self-crosslinking. Oil and solvent resistant; used for double-sided PET and tissue tapes, electrical tape and aluminium foil tape.
  • AP 1065: Single-pack and self-crosslinking, with high shear. Specified on PET and PP films, paper, synthetic fabrics and foils, and also used on XLPE, PE and PU foams.
  • AP 1765: Two-pack, high solids at a coatable viscosity. Its datasheet names double-face tapes, curved surfaces, plastics and PU, PE and cross-linked foams.

Which grades suit double-sided tapes?

Advance Adhesives Private Limited, a manufacturer of adhesives in Belagavi, India, since 1995, makes four grades for double-sided tapes: AP 1265HP, AP 1453, AP 1065 and AP 1765. They are made for double-sided tissue tapes (solvent tapes), double-sided PET (polyester) film tapes, double-sided foam tapes and other high-performance double-sided tapes. The grades are used on PET and PP films, tissue and paper, synthetic fabrics, foils and XLPE, PE and PU foams. We measured peel, tack and shear in our own laboratory according to PSTC methods, with the adhesive coated on 25 µm PET at 25 ± 2 gsm. Peel is how firmly the tape holds on to the surface; shear is whether it creeps under a constant load. A double-sided tape fails at the weaker of the two, so for mounting and joining work read the shear column before the peel column.
