Adhesives by application
Adhesives for aluminium foil tapes
An aluminium foil tape is a tape that seals and joins foil-faced materials. Its adhesive has to stick to the foil and to the surface it meets, and keep holding for years. Our foil-tape grades are high-solids solvent acrylic PSAs: two are oil and solvent resistant, and a two-pack grade is also used for aluminium foam tapes.
What matters
Why does anchorage to the foil matter?
The adhesive must key to the foil itself as well as to the surface the tape is pressed onto. A tape that leaves its adhesive behind has failed at the foil, not the surface.
How do foil tapes age?
Foil tapes are usually meant to stay in place for years. Acrylic PSAs resist oxidation and light better than rubber-based adhesives, and all three of our foil-tape grades are acrylics.
Why test peel on the real surface?
Our peel values are measured on stainless steel. Foil tapes are often pressed onto foil facings, painted metal or insulation jackets, so test on the surface the tape will meet.
What coat weight does foil need?
Foil does not conform the way a film does, so the adhesive layer has to fill an uneven surface. Compare grades on our 25 gsm basis, then set the coat weight on trial.
What are the typical values?
| Grade | 180° peel | Loop tack | Shear | Solids |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AP 1265HP | 2500 ± 10% gf/25 mm | 1400 – 1600 gf/inch | > 60 h | 64 ± 2% |
| AP 1453 | 1400 ± 10% gf/25 mm | 1200 – 1400 gf/inch | > 1000 h | 53 ± 2% |
| AP 1765Two-pack | 2500 ± 10% gf/25 mm | 2000 – 2500 gf/inch | > 18 h | 64 ± 2% |
We measured these values in our own laboratory according to PSTC methods: 180° peel on stainless steel, with the adhesive coated on 25 µm PET at 25 ± 2 gsm. Shear is printed as a minimum.
Which grade does what?
- AP 1265HP: High solids, high performance; oil and solvent resistant. Named for aluminium foil tape, double-sided tapes and decals.
- AP 1453: Single-pack, self-crosslinking; oil and solvent resistant. Named for aluminium foil tape, double-sided tapes and decals.
- AP 1765: Two-pack, high solids. Named for aluminium foil tape and aluminium foam tape, and used for foam–aluminium sandwiches.
Substrates
Which grades suit aluminium foil tapes?
Advance Adhesives Private Limited, a manufacturer of adhesives in Belagavi, India, since 1995, makes three grades for aluminium foil tapes: AP 1265HP, AP 1453 and AP 1765. They are made for aluminium foil tapes, aluminium foam tapes and foam–aluminium foil sandwiches. The grades are used on aluminium foil, XLPE, PE and PU foams, PET and PP films and paper. We measured peel, tack and shear in our own laboratory according to PSTC methods, with the adhesive coated on 25 µm PET at 25 ± 2 gsm. The adhesive must key to the foil itself as well as to the surface the tape is pressed onto. A tape that leaves its adhesive behind has failed at the foil, not the surface.
